There are many different types of lights to choose from. There is a light for every occasion or mood. There is the original incandescent light bulb, all the way to the versatile and adaptive LED. There is also fluorescent lighting. This type of lighting is powerful and closely replicates the look of actual sunlight. It is a smart choice as it is better than the old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs. Fluorescent Lighting is the way to go.

Fluorescent lighting has been around in some form or another since the mid-1800s, but it did not gain any real commercial traction until the early 1900s. Fluorescent light is made up of a low-pressure lamp that is filled with mercury vapor gas discharge. The phosphor is coated all along the inside of the lamp. An electric current is then run through the lamp. The current reacts with the mercury vapor to create ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light reacts with the phosphor to start glowing. This glow is the visible light.

The energy needed to light up a fluorescent lamp is efficiently used, especially when compared to incandescent light. This is because it only takes a small amount of energy to ignite the chemical reaction that produces the visible light. By contrast, an incandescent bulb needs much more energy to heat up the filament inside the bulb. The illuminating ability of any typical fluorescent light is anywhere from 50 to 100 lumens. A lumen is the unit of measurement for how well a light source creates visible light. A comparable incandescent light only measures 5 to 25 lumens. On the other end of the spectrum a LED, Light Emitting Diode, creates, even more, lumens than a fluorescent light.

Fluorescent lighting has a more expensive but when compared to LEDs or incandescent bulbs. This is because fluorescent bulbs require a ballast to function correctly. The ballast is there to regulate the electrical current needed to power the light. Do not let this be a deterrent to you because the efficient design of a fluorescent light leads to notable cheaper electric bills. The cheaper monthly bills will more than pay off the slightly higher buy-in cost and installation fees.

Fluorescent bulbs are now widely available. In addition to that, compact fluorescent bulbs now come in the size of the regulation incandescent bulb. These compact bulbs do not require a ballast, so there is no reason to not invest in these brand new bulbs. The Environmental Protection Agency has even marked fluorescent bulbs as energy saving and better for the environment. There is no reason to not switch over from incandescent bulbs. They are brighter, they are more efficient, and they save you money. Fluorescent lights are the smarter choice.
