  • Electricity and water are a deadly combination. Always stay out of any areas that may be damp or wet from sprinklers, hoses or pools while using any sort of electricity.
  • Ensure all ladders, both metal and wooden, are at least 10 ft away from power lines.
  • Immediately unplug outdoor appliances and/or tools when you are finished using them.
  • Check all cords, plugs and their housing for damage before using appliances and tools.
  • Test your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Also map out an escape plan in the event of a fire and review it with your entire family.
  • Consider surge protection to keep your home & expensive appliances/electronics safe from power surges caused by lightning, utility company maintenance, bad wiring.

5 Ways An Annual Electrical Inspection Protects You:

To ensure your home’s electrical system is in good condition, you should have an electrical system safety inspection performed annually by licensed professionals. Kings offers an 18 point inspection performed by qualified electricians. During an inspection, our electricians will to thoroughly investigate every aspect of your home’s electrical system and bring to light any issues related to:

1. Malfunctioning or Unsafe Outlets

An inspection will determine if any of your outlets and wiring are old or damaged, which increases risk of electrical fires and tripped breakers, when surges pass through.

GFCI Outlets

GFCI outlets, short for ground fault circuit interrupter, protect against harmful shocks caused by ground faults, especially in places with water like bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms for example.

In a GFCI outlet, current flow is measured for each prong. If a small imbalance is perceived, the current flow to the receptacle is ended almost instantaneously. This saves an unaware person who contacts the wire or outlet from serious shock or even death.

Outdoor Outlet Bubbles

Outdoor outlets are regularly subject to damage, especially from water. The outlet’s internal wiring is exposed when the cover is damaged or missing which compromises the GFCI’s ability to trip the breaker if necessary. The bubble cover not only protects the outlet while nothing is plugged in, but even works to protect while a cord IS plugged in. Preventing water damage to the GFCI outlet, as well as blown circuits, breakers or fuses, which can lead to power loss in other parts of your home.

2. Arc Faults

Arc faults happen when corroded and/or loose connections make improper contact, creating an arc between connections. Circuit breakers are only made to stop ground faults so arc faults might not trigger their current stopping mechanism. Arc faults pose a serious risk of sparking electrical fires.

An AFCI, or arc fault circuit interrupter, is a breaker that will sense arc faults and halt the power supply to the damaged circuit. These can be installed into your electrical panel if your electrical contractor deems it necessary during an inspection.

3. Overloaded & Dedicated Circuits

You’ll also want to be sure that your system is up to current electrical codes. Electrical codes are generally reevaluated and changed every few years. Which means circuits that were considered safe in the near past may now be deemed unsafe and require replacement.

From computers to automated home comfort systems, our busy routines require lots of electronics & appliances and our modern electronics & appliances require lots of energy! Electrical fires, blown fuses or tripped breakers can occur if an appliance draws too much power without a dedicated circuit.

The National Electrical Code requires that each individual appliance that requires larger amounts of energy should be powered by its own circuit. During an inspection an electrician will be able to make sure that there are no points of overload in your home’s electrical system and offer you suggestions to maintain a safe transmission of energy.

Examples of appliances that require dedicated circuits include:

  • Space Heaters
  • Washers & Dryers
  • Refrigerators
  • Stoves
  • Microwaves
  • Garbage Disposals

4. Outdoor Lighting, Pools, Hot Tubs & Boat Docks

An annual pool and/or boat dock inspection is one of the most important steps to secure your family’s electrical safety this spring and summer. Being the only components of your electrical system that actually reside IN water, these must be inspected at least once a year and very closely monitored all season to ensure safe enjoyment.

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”3_5″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding=”undefined” dimension_margin=”undefined” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text]

Outdoor lighting also needs to be regularly checked for water and wire damage so as to avoid the possibility of electrical mishaps. Your electrician should review them as part of their annual inspection services.

5. Smoke & CO Detectors

Your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be professionally inspected. These will likely be your first warnings during an emergency and can give you precious seconds to act in the case of potentially deadly carbon monoxide fumes or house fires.
